Winning At Weight Loss

by | Jun 27, 2024

What are your weight loss or health goals for the rest of this month?  Typically, when I ask this question, the answers come in one of two ways:

1- They are either very number-oriented (i.e., “I want to lose 10 lbs.”).

2- They are very vague (i.e., “I want to have better habits.”).

But if I’m being 100% honest with you – these goals might not get you where you truly want to go. We all have that NEED in us that WANTS to WIN, right? We need to lose weight. We need to see that number on the scale go down. But we get so hyper-focused on just losing weight, on just that number, that we miss the bigger picture.

I want to offer you something different. If you want to lose the weight and keep it off, you need to define your goals beyond just a number on the scale. You need a goal that’s more meaningful than just “lose 10 pounds.” And here’s how I’m going to help you figure out what those goals really are.

The Pitfalls of Simply Chasing a Number

We’ve all been there—I want to lose 20 pounds, we say. But even after achieving that goal, we still feel unsatisfied. We might think we need to lose more, or we may become hyper-focused on the number on the scale, losing sight of the bigger picture. The truth is, weight loss alone does not necessarily lead to the transformation we seek.

Defining Goals Beyond the Scale

To truly achieve lasting success in weight loss, we need to redefine our goals. It’s not just about reaching a certain number; it’s about envisioning how weight loss can change our lives. Imagine yourself 20 pounds lighter—what are you wearing? What activities are you enjoying? How is your overall lifestyle different? By delving deeper into these questions, we gain a more holistic understanding of what we truly want to achieve.

The Shift from Weight Loss to Total Transformation

Consider this: in the context of bodybuilding competitions, the focus is not on a specific weight goal, but on a comprehensive transformation involving muscle gain and fat loss. Similarly, we should shift our focus from just shedding pounds to building a leaner, healthier body. It’s about having more muscle and less body fat, and feeling confident and comfortable in our own skin.

Embracing Feelings and Resisting External Validation

In our weight loss journey, it’s essential to embrace our feelings and not seek solace in food or other distractions. Feeling our emotions and processing them is a crucial part of the human experience. We need to normalize the expression of feelings rather than suppress them, as this can lead to a healthier relationship with our bodies and our wellbeing.

Prioritizing Daily Actions Over Daily Weigh-Ins

Instead of fixating on daily fluctuations in weight, we should concentrate on consistent daily actions that align with our health and fitness goals. Planning and executing these actions—whether it’s exercise, nutrition, or self-care—will eventually lead to sustainable weight loss and overall well-being.

Breaking Free From The Scale

By redefining our weight loss goals, focusing on total transformation, embracing our feelings, and prioritizing daily actions, we can break free from the narrow constraints of the scale and truly win at weight loss. It’s time to see beyond the numbers and embrace a holistic, empowering approach to our well-being.
