The Facts About Magical Macros

“I count macros” is the newest flex in the world of dieting and fitness. In fact, it seems like everyone, and their mothers are doing it. Which makes it seem like some magical way to lose weight. But is it? In this episode of Unf*ck Your Weight Loss, I’m giving you the facts about those magical macros to help you decide if counting macros is the best plan for you!

Me and macros go way back.

My history with macros goes all the way back to 2009. That’s when I was working with a coach and started to try out different ways of eating. What I found is that I truly loved the data that I received from working with macros. And truth be told, a lot of people love this data. 

Macros 101

Macro tracking is a more sophisticated form of calorie counting. It allows you to not only track your calories, but also to track what percentage of your calories are coming from protein, fat, and carbohydrates. There are many different apps that can help you do this tracking. One I suggest is the free version of MyFitnessPal.

I often encourage my private coaching clients to experiment and see what works for them. I mean, we are all different, right? One person may need 35% protein, 35% fat, and 30% carbs. Another may need something completely different. But this is the interesting data that macro tracking can give you. It goes beyond calories in and calories out and allows you to see if you are giving your body what it needs to function at its best.

Magical Macros

There is this perception that macros are fucking magical or that you need to track macros in order to lose weight. And that’s simply not true. It is one way to lose. Just track your intake. I have had many clients and friends who track macros and don’t lose weight. So, it’s not an automatic weight loss tool. It is something that can be beneficial.

The Pitfalls of Tracking Macros

1- The data being collected is only as good as the person putting it in. If you aren’t measuring and tracking every single little thing you put in your body, then your macro tracking is going to be incorrect and so will your calories. If you’re going to track macros, you really have to go all in.

2- Macros are just numbers that don’t account for any other factors in weight loss. FACT: Most of weight loss is going to be mindset. It is going to be your thoughts and your feelings that leading you to the actions and behaviors of doing the things that lead to weight loss. There’s no macros in the world that even address your emotions and behaviors.

3- It’s not enough just to do percentages. 20% fat from 1000 calories and 20% from 3000 calories are going to yield very different results. You have to look at both your caloric intake and your macros if you want to possibly lose weight.

I’m a fan of macros.

Don’t get me wrong. I think macros are a good tool to use especially if you are just starting out. I have my clients use them. But there are some caveats to macros tracking, too.
